Stechelberg: the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley
Stechelberg is the last village in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, about 20 minutes' drive from the motorway. It is where the Schilthorn cable car starts, with Gimmelwald, Mürren and Piz Gloria above.

Stechelberg is a small village at about the end of the road in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, in the Bernese Oberland. Most visitors know it for one reason: the Schilthorn cable car (Schilthornbahn) starts here, and the ride climbs via Gimmelwald and Mürren to Birg and the Schilthorn summit with the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, at 2,970 m.
But Stechelberg is also worth a stop on its own. The valley floor is flat and green, the cliffs are close, and several waterfalls fall within sight. Trails start right from the village, and it is much quieter in the evening than Lauterbrunnen.
What to see around Stechelberg
- The Schilthorn cable car up to Piz Gloria and the Thrill Walk.
- Trümmelbach Falls, glacier-fed falls inside the mountain, a short bus ride away.
- Gimmelwald and Mürren, two car-free villages above the valley.
- Hiking from Stechelberg, from an easy valley walk to high mountain trails.
- Where to stay in Stechelberg, Lauterbrunnen or Mürren.
Check the weather first: the valley can be sunny while the Schilthorn is in cloud. Look at the live webcams and the operating status on the day. Our weather and practical page explains what to check.
